Montessori Philosophy Basics

The Montessori philosophy is an educational approach that was developed by Dr. Maria Montessori, an Italian physician and educator, in the early 1900s. The approach is based on the belief that children have an innate desire to learn and explore their world, and that they learn best when they are given the freedom to discover things for themselves.

The method is child-centered and emphasizes hands-on learning, self-directed activity, and collaborative play. In Montessori, the environment is carefully prepared to encourage exploration, and children are given the freedom to choose their own activities and work at their own pace.

Some of the core tenets of the Montessori philosophy include:

  • Respect for the child: The philosophy is based on the belief that children are inherently capable of learning and developing themselves. Therefore, the role of the parent or teacher is to respect and support the child's individual needs and interests, rather than impose their own ideas.
  • Prepared environment: Montessori homes and classrooms are carefully prepared environments that are designed to meet the developmental needs of the children who will be using them. The environment is accessible to the child (e.g. child sized furniture and/or furniture that makes it possible for the child to reach the adult-sized areas of the home) and includes a variety of materials and activities that allow children to learn and explore independently.
  • Hands-on learning: Montessori homes and classrooms emphasize hands-on learning and self-discovery. Children are encouraged to use all of their senses to explore the environment and learn through their own experiences.
  • Emphasis on independence: The Montessori philosophy places a strong emphasis on the development of independence, self-motivation, and self-discipline in children. This is achieved through encouraging children to make their own choices, take responsibility for their own learning, and learn from their mistakes.

Overall, the Montessori philosophy is centered around the belief that children are naturally curious and capable of learning, and that the role of the parent or teacher is to guide and support children as they explore and discover the world around them. The approach seeks to support and nurture this natural love of learning by creating an environment that is supportive, engaging, and conducive to exploration and discovery.

Screen Time from a "Modern Montessori" Perspective

Maria Montessori didn't share any information about screen time because... well... it wasn't a thing yet! But since she based her methods in science, I think she would have taken a research-based approach (and not a fear-based approach or zero-screen approach like I've seen promoted sometimes). The Montessori method focuses on hands-on education and real-life learning, so I don't think Dr. Montessori would have encouraged screens in her infant, toddler, or primary classrooms. However, I think she would have seen a place for screens in the elementary years and up (see the section Older Children below).
